New Horizon Centre believes that the development of its staff is of fundamental importance to achieving its goals and objectives. We employ a full time Training and Development Manager to organise and deliver a comprehensive programme of training for all our staff.

Induction training
Our induction training programme involves a week's training in a classroom situation which includes the following topics: Children's Act, Care Standards, The Every Child Matters Outcomes, Child Protection, Appropriate Adult, Child Development, Care Planning, Behaviour Management, Anger Management, Handling of Medication, Food Hygiene and Health and Safety, Data Protection and Human Rights. In addition staff are given full training in safe physical intervention using the CPI methodology.

Trainee care staff are also provided with practical training working alongside experienced care staff until meeting the required level of competence. For the remainder of the probation period staff are provided with mentor support under the direction of the Training and Development Manager and are subject to regular assessment and supervision.

Foundation training
All our care staff then undertake a foundation training course leading to an NVQ Level 3 certificate in Caring for Children and Young People.

Advanced Training
Further advanced training is also available in a wide range of topics including: Keyworker skills, Independent life skills, Mentor skills, education support, Managing violence, Risk assessment, Advocacy, Appropriate adult, Special needs, BSL and Communication skills.

Staff are also given the opportunity to progress to NVQ Level for in Care.
